What Are Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to permanently replace a missing tooth (or several teeth) by joining an artificial tooth to adjacent teeth or dental implants. A dental bridge not only restores the physical appearance of a full smile but also serves important functional roles like proper chewing and speech. Made to blend with your natural teeth seamlessly, bridges are anchored to the neighbouring teeth or implants, providing a stable, long-lasting solution to tooth loss.

The Process Of Receiving A Bridge

The process of receiving a dental bridge requires two appointments with your dentist and multiple steps.

  • During the first appointment, your dentist will file down the two healthy teeth on each side of the missing tooth (or teeth) to prepare them for the bridge.
  • Your dentist will then make a model of your teeth by taking impressions to create a model. This model is used to custom-make the artificial tooth (or teeth) attached to two crowns that will be installed on the surrounding healthy teeth to provide stability. This fixture is the dental bridge.
  • Meanwhile, your dentist places a temporary bridge in your mouth to protect the exposed teeth and gums.
  • During your second visit, your dentist removes the temporary bridge and installs the custom- made bridge in your mouth by cementing the crowns to your two healthy teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental bridges offer several benefits, including restoring your smile, improving chewing and speaking abilities, maintaining the shape of your face, and preventing remaining teeth from shifting out of position. They are a reliable and durable solution for replacing missing teeth.

Dental bridges can last 5 to 15 years or longer with proper care. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices can help extend the lifespan of your bridge. However, over time, it may require replacement due to wear and tear or changes in your oral health.

Receiving a dental bridge at Janz Family Dental involves two appointments. On the first visit, the dentist prepares the adjacent teeth and takes impressions to create a custom bridge. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the area. During the second visit, the temporary bridge is replaced with the permanent custom bridge, which is cemented onto the prepared teeth for stability.

For both dental crowns and bridges, regular hygiene visits and good oral hygiene help to prevent decay from getting under the crown and increase life span.

While there are no strict dietary restrictions, our dentists advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods that could damage the bridge. Maintaining a balanced diet and practicing good oral hygiene will help keep your bridge in excellent condition.

If a dental bridge becomes damaged, depending on the extent of the damage, it may be possible to repair it. Minor issues can often be fixed, but severe damage may require bridge replacement. Our dentists can help you determine the best course of action.
