New to Edmonton, or looking for a dentist accepting new patients? Janz Family Dental is a full-service clinic caring for families and individuals in West Edmonton and beyond. A first visit to a new clinic can feel overwhelming, so we make it simple from the moment you walk in to the end of your appointment.

Preparation for Your First Dental Visit

At Janz Family Dental, we care about your well-being and about your pearly whites. We want your first appointment to be a breeze, so here’s what you need to know before you come in. Everything you need is on our New Patients page. We cover the essentials below.

What Forms Do You Need to Fill Out?

Your medical history helps us give you safe, effective care at every visit. Please complete our medical and dental questionnaire before your appointment.

Dental Fees & Payment Options

Janz Family Dental also accepts patients under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which helps cover preventive, basic, and major dental care for eligible Canadians without dental insurance and with an adjusted family net income under $90,000.

Low-income Albertans may also qualify for the Alberta Adult Health Benefit, and the Alberta Dental Foundation lists other options for help with dental costs.

Insurance Providers

Janz Family Dental offers direct billing to most insurance providers, and patients can call ahead to confirm whether their insurer is included. We follow the Alberta fee guide, though out-of-pocket costs can vary depending on each insurer’s payment schedule.

We recommend reviewing your plan ahead of time, especially if you expect full coverage, and check your annual maximum (often $1,000 to $2,000) so you can book treatment before it resets. Find more information on Janz’s Alberta Fee Guide page.

To recap, here is what to bring to your first dental appointment:

  • Your insurance plan and policy numbers, plus any coverage booklets
  • A list of current medications
  • Cash, debit or a major credit card for any co-pay or remaining balance

What Happens at Your First Dental Visit

Your first dental visit is all about getting to know you. We’ll start by listening: you can tell us about your dental history, any concerns, and what you’d like from your care.

Next, your dentist will thoroughly check your teeth, gums, and mouth, take X-rays if needed, and explain what they see in plain language. Depending on your appointment, you may also have a cleaning with one of our hygienists. Before you leave, you’ll understand any treatment we recommend and your options, and we’ll help you book your next visit.

Nervous About Your Visit? You’re Not Alone

Many people feel anxious about going to the dentist, and we never judge. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since your last visit or what kind of shape you think your teeth are in. We’re just glad you’re here. Let us know when you book or when you arrive if you’re feeling uneasy, and we’ll take things at your pace. Your dentist will explain each step before it happens, and you can ask questions or take a break anytime. Nothing happens without your okay, and your first visit is mainly about getting to know you, so that you won’t be rushed into any treatment.
