What Are Dental Crowns?

Used to strengthen and improve the appearance of teeth that are broken or decaying, crowns can often be completed in two simple visits. Crowns can be used on one tooth or your entire set of teeth to brighten your smile and improve the function of your teeth. Crowns not only improve the look of your teeth but will also reduce pain in damaged teeth and help prevent further damage. Crowns are also durable: Dental crowns should last between five to fifteen years, depending on how you care for them. The following are the benefits of a dental crown:

crown-Function

Function

Due to their natural tooth-like features, crowns restore the full function of your missing or damaged tooth. Crowns restore your ability to chew.

crown-Durability

Durability

A crown can keep a cracked tooth together and prevent or delay having to have a tooth extracted by your dentist.

Appearance

Appearance

A crown can cover up a stained or unusually shaped tooth, adding to your self-confidence and giving you a nicer smile.

The Process of Receiving a Crown

Receiving a dental crown is typically a two-appointment process. The first appointment consists of preparing the tooth to receive the crown by shaving down the outside of the tooth. Your dentist will also take impressions for the permanent crown, fabricate a temporary crown and send the impressions off to the lab to make the permanent crown.

During the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is installed on the tooth with dental cement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, dental crowns are often used to protect and restore a tooth after a root canal. They provide strength and stability to the treated tooth, helping to preserve its function and appearance.

Traditional dental crown placement process typically involves two appointments over a few weeks. The first visit includes tooth preparation and impressions and placing a temporary crown. The final visit involves fitting and cementing the custom-made crown.

For both dental crowns and bridges, regular hygiene visits and good oral hygiene help to prevent decay from getting under the crown and increase life span.

Dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. However, they may require replacement due to normal wear and tear, changes in bite, or other dental issues. Regular dental visits can help monitor their condition.

Dental crowns cannot be whitened like natural teeth. It’s important to choose the shade of your crown to match your surrounding teeth. If you are considering teeth whitening, it’s best to do so before getting a crown.

While dental crowns are durable, our dentists advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods that could damage or dislodge the crown. Chewing on ice or hard candies should also be avoided to prevent damage.
