Taking care of your teeth shouldn’t have to take a bite out of your budget, but for many Canadians, the cost of regular dental care has been a financial barrier. To address these challenges, the federal government introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). This program is designed to make essential dental visits more affordable and accessible.

If you’re wondering if you qualify, what’s covered, and how CDCP dental coverage works, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn more.

What is the CDCP?

The CDCP is a federally funded program that aims to lower financial barriers to oral health care. It is specifically designed for Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance and are middle- to low-income.

It is important to understand that the CDCP is a government benefit program rather than a completely free dental program. While it covers a significant portion—and in some cases, all—of the costs for eligible services, patients may still have some out-of-pocket expenses depending on their household income and the fees charged by their dental clinic.

How Much Does the CDCP Cover? (Co-payments Explained)

The amount of coverage you receive depends entirely on your adjusted family net income. Here is how much the government covers versus your individual co-payment:

  • Under $70,000: The CDCP covers 100% of eligible service costs based on the CDCP-established fees. (0% patient co-payment).
  • Between $70,000 and $79,999: The CDCP covers 60% of eligible costs. You are responsible for a 40% co-payment.
  • Between $80,000 and $89,999: The CDCP covers 40% of eligible costs. You are responsible for a 60% co-payment.

Who is Eligible for the CDCP?

To qualify for CDCP dental coverage, you must:

  • Not have access to dental insurance
  • Be up to date with filing tax returns
  • Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes

What if you have provincial government coverage?

If you currently receive dental benefits through a provincial, territorial, or federal social program (such as Alberta Works or the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped – AISH), you can still qualify for the CDCP. Your benefits will be coordinated between the plans to ensure there are no gaps or duplication in your coverage.

What is Covered Under the CDCP?

CDCP dental coverage includes a range of oral health services recommended to prevent and treat dental disease. Covered services generally fall into these categories:

  • Diagnostic & Preventive Services: Exams, X-rays, routine cleanings (scaling and polishing), fluoride applications, and sealants.
  • Basic Restorative Services: Permanent and temporary fillings to treat cavities and broken teeth.
  • Endodontic Services: Root canal treatments and procedures to relieve pain or infection.
  • Periodontal Services: Deep cleanings under the gumline and management of gum disease.
  • Major Restorative Services: Removable complete and partial dentures, crowns, and posts (some major services require preauthorization from the program before treatment begins).
  • Oral Surgery: Tooth extractions, root removals, and surgical incisions.

How the CDCP Works: Step-by-Step

1. Applying and Renewing

Applications are processed online through the Government of Canada website or via phone. Once approved, you’ll receive a welcome package containing your member card and specific coverage start date.

Note: You must renew your coverage every year. The annual renewal window generally takes place in the spring after you file your taxes, and must be completed to ensure your coverage stays active for the upcoming benefit year.

2. Confirming Your Provider Accepts the CDCP

Not all dental clinics automatically participate in the CDCP. Before scheduling your appointment, contact the clinic to ensure they accept the plan and can bill Sun Life directly.

At Janz Family Dental, we’re proud to serve patients under the CDCP.

3. Attending Your Appointment

When you arrive for your visit, bring your CDCP member ID card or your government determination letter. Your dental team will verify your active status and check whether any recommended treatments require preauthorization.

4. Settling the Balance

To minimize your out-of-pocket stress, we offer direct billing. This means you will only need to pay your co-payment percentage plus any outstanding difference between the CDCP fee schedule and the clinic’s standard rates. Janz Family Dental follows the Alberta dental fee guide to make paying for your visit as stress-free as possible.
